Skin is the fabric of our identity. How we expose it, cover it, or mark it manifests who we are and influences how the world sees us. But what is skin without identity?
In this project, over 50 photos of people’s skin were compiled and turned into wearable temporary tattoos. Birthmarks, scars, ink, hair, veins – each ‘tattoo’ reveals distinct features. Who is behind each of them remains untold – their gender, their nationality, their social status, their struggle, their story... their identity. Their skin is somewhat objectified. Their individual features merely let us make assumptions about the owners and their culture.
This series aims to highlight the power of skin, while giving everyone the opportunity to wear someone else's skin. But will it become an accessories? Or will it spark empathy? Even if we stripped it of identity, can skin ever be apolitical? We doubt it.
Special thanks to Barros and Farrell Sean Nugroho.
